Daily Bridge in New Zealand

NO HATTRICK BUT NZ WIDE PAIRS TROPHY STAYS UP NORTH!

Live tournament numbers may have been struggling a bit in recent months but the annual New Zealand Wide Pairs still retains its popularity with 55 clubs and 865 pairs taking part. There was one extra and large heat which had movement issues and could not be scored.

The event raises money for New Zealand Bridge Foundation, an organisation which helps both bridge clubs and players and also gives players an opportunity to play a national event at their own or at a club close to them.

Thanks to Babich Wines for their support of this event for the last 20 years. This year, we had a new sponsor, one in the same wine industry, Loveblock Wines. Do give their wines a go. https://www.glengarrywines.co.nz/search?criteria=loveblock

There is of course a bridge connection between Loveblock and bridge and that is the mother of the winery’s owner, Sonia Crawford, who is a Life Member of the Matamata Club and who still plays lots of bridge there, good bridge too. She played in this event at Matamata with Noel Grigg and they won their heat East/West with 60.23%.

On though to those who did well. For the last two years, the trophy for the winners has gone to KeriKeri with Maureen Russ and Vivienne Sexton the winners. They made a decent attempt at going for the hat-trick too scoring 60.10 at their home club. However, that was not enough for three times in a row though once again, the event has been won by a pair in the Far North. Here then are the prize-winners for the event, all of whom will receive a two bottle wine pack from Loveblock Wines:

Please note that a pair can win only one prize. So, some of the category winners are in the top 5 and do not get two prizes. All winners will be presented with their wines at their clubs, with compulsory photos!

Thus, a great result for the North, especially for Northland and also for Auckland’s North Shore club in particular. It is certainly an event in which any pair can do well. In the top 5, we have two Intermediate players playing with Open players (the first two places) and a Junior pair (3rd) along with a couple of experienced Open pairs.

The region with the most participating clubs was Auckland -Northland (12 clubs, 90 tables) followed by Waikato Bays (9 clubs, 59 tables) and Wellington and Central Districts (both 8 clubs and 71 tables).

The largest heats were Wellington (15 tables), Waikanae and Westport (13 tables) and the following with 11, 11.5, 12 or 12.5 tables: Mt Albert, Royle Epsom, Hokowhitu, Napier, Upper Hutt and Wanaka.

It was a night at many clubs to socialize, perhaps enjoy a feed beforehand and play a round of bridge and raise some money for New Zealand Bridge Foundation. Seems a good way to spend a Friday night.

Thanks to the super-fast scorers, Bob Fearn, Michael Neels, Anna Kalma and Jan Spaans and to all those who helped in putting on the heats at the clubs.

We will post later pictures of the winners with their prizes. Meanwhile, note down the date for next year’s event, Friday November 10th, hopefully at the club where you play.
