The auction was very controlled with 3Spade-small being forcing. Lysandra reasoned that most of her partner’s high card points would be in the minor suits. With her own key void, she jumped to slam and was rewarded with a very satisfactory dummy and a kind enough trump break.

Meanwhile, Ashley Bach and Nick Jacob made it harder for their opponents.

Ashley’s jump to game gave his opponents very little room to move. South might have wondered over 4Spade-small but passed. Only 3 out of 12 pairs in the Open event bid the slam.

There was no invitation here after Tim rebid his spades. Game required a friendly spade lay-out (there was), Heart-smallA with East (it was) and a successful guess in one of the minors. Diamond-small10 lead enabled Tim to come to 10 tricks while an invitational Indian auction in the other room finished in 3Spade-small. Only four Open pairs bid and made game.

More from the APBF tomorrow. Matches are on BBO from 1.00pm New Zealand time. New Zealand's Open Team is playing Australia, the current leaders at 1pm today Monday.
