SONIA GILL JOINS RBM TEAM

We warmly welcome Sonia Gill to the role of Regional Bridge Mate for Canterbury. With a wealth of experience in media Sonia hits the ground running - here is some information on the latest member of the RBM team.

Sonia Gill

I joined the learners class for the first time in Dunedin in 1986 at the age of 16, they taught Goran then... I didn't take it any further. Then around 1990 my husband wanted to learn. We lived in Ashburton at the time and we were taught Acol by the lovely Joanna Fechney. We played every week and most weekends. I travelled to Wellington for tuition with Lionel Wright along with a select under 25 New Zealand youth group. This I would still say was the highlight of my bridge career. At this time of my bridge journey I was very enthusiastic and joined the Christchurch club as well and commuted up there at least once a week. I remained a member of both clubs until children came along. Although it was a delight for members to have a new born at the Friday afternoon sessions in Ashburton children became first and bridge slipped away albeit a brief membership with the Oamaru club in 1997. We moved to Timaru and joint the Timaru club but seldom played in 2000. Moving back to Dunedin I rejoined the Dunedin Club and by 2006 I was playing weekly again and tournaments in the weekend - going on to represent the Otago women's team in 2007 in Hamilton. Work commitments saw bridge pushed aside again.
We moved back to Timaru in 2012 and I am now a member of the Waimate club where I meet my mother from Oamaru for the championship pairs.

Sonia is fired up, full of energy and enthusiasm to grow the game in the Canterbury region.
