The Hawera club is certainly well-off for Directors these days!  All four candidates passed with colours flying. They are:  Glenice Houghton, Irene Taunt, Justine Hart, and Mara Robinson. Congratulations to all eight.

The Levin club had good reason to be pleased with the result of the Babich Wines New Zealand Wide Pairs played on 2nd November. Cath Cooper and Sharon Wanden won the honours for being first in the Central Districts region.  While both have been playing for a year or two, they are still graded as Intermediates. Congratulations Cath and Sharon .. 66.09% fully deserves some of the sponsor’s fine products.

The Anniversary Pairs at New Plymouth was held in November and attracted a strong field.  Winners were Charles Ker and Steve Baron ..

Palmerston North held yet another highly successful "Christmas Cheer" tournament early in December. This always attracts a full house. 32 tables entered and everybody enjoyed a great day of bridge followed by a magnificent Christmas Dinner organised by Mairi and Mathew Bristow. The prizes list extended to the 24th pair!  Liz Burrows deserves a Damehood for her work in organising and then wrapping all of the prizes.  The table always looks very colourful and attractive. Excellent work, Palmerston North.

The top six pairs all averaged 60% plus but the big winners were Pam Livingston/Alister Stuck, followed by Robyn and Don Nightingale. Judith Jackson/Jean Wardill were 3rd, Then came the Ker brothers, Russell Wilson/George Masters and Ross Quayle/Martin Carryer.

"Picnic and Play"

Picnic tournaments are popular at this time of year and 3-in-a-row on successive Sundays begins at New Plymouth on January 27th.

The Wanganui Picnic follows on February 3rd and Hawera completes the trifecta on Sunday February 10th.  To encourage players to take part in all three tournaments, Hawera stalwarts, Allan and Kevin Upson, have donated an impressive trophy which is up for challenge each year. This is awarded to the pair with the highest net score, provided they play in all three. At present it is held by New Plymouth's Barry Marsh and Lou Stolte.
