Canberra Week 2: South West Pacific Teams Day 2

Day 2 was almost a repeat of Day 1 for the Leibowitz team, the team which includes Matt Brown-Michael Whibley and Michael Cornell- Ashley Bach. They had two good wins but suffered a loss to the strong Buchen team on the last match of the day to leave them a little below where they would like to be at the half-way point in qualifying, back in 17th place. The top 8 qualify for the National Open Teams.

The +300 Specialists

We showed Matt Brown and Michael Whibley picking up +300 yesterday. They were at it again on Day 2:

Hindsight is a wonderful attribute but West might have been fearful of club ruffs since he knew where 9 of the clubs were. 4Spade-small proved to be the wrong action.

Matt led his club singleton. Michael cashed the Diamond-smallK for count and then gave Matt a club ruff. Back to the Diamond-smallA and another ruff to be followed by a diamond ruff. That was +300. Easy defence, you may say? At 11 tables, 4Spade-small made 10 tricks. At the other table in this match, the contract was 3NT which made an overtrick after Club-smallJ lead. …14 imps to Leibowitz.

A Not so light Pre-empt

Some pairs get some very good results from light wildish pre-empts. However, there are times when that style does not work. What action would you take if your partner, North, who is known to be aggressive in pre-empting, opened 3Club-small in first seat at equal nil vul:

Your hand as South: Spade-small AQJ86   Heart-small AK  Diamond-small J93  Club-smallAK3

There is no opposition bid to help you.

Against Leibowitz- Erichsen, South opted for safety with 3NT but found their partner to be rather stronger than they would have wished:

Mike Cornell did not open the North hand which enabled their partnership to bid to the excellent 6Club-small slam which made in comfort after a trump lead.
