Kiwis on the Coast -Day 3, Monday
Congratulations to Susan Humphries- Michael Whibley and Liz and Blair Fisher who won their sections in the Bobby Richman Open Pairs. Andrew Janisz and his Canadian partner, Mark Siegrist, came very close in Section C while Matthew Brown was the highest finishing Kiwi in the overall event finishing 5th in Section A with his Australian partner, Andrew Spooner.
Meanwhile, in Restricted Final A, Pam Whitehead and Stuart Grant scored an excellent 62% in the third round which brought them up to 2nd overall, an excellent result. Young Kiwi player, William Han, came within one board of winning the Novice event after he and his partner had led for much of the competition. They had to make do with second. Here are the Kiwis in the top 10:

Just one hand today, one to reinforce the well-known saying that “the 5 level belongs to the opposition."

In the above auction, East has a nice 2-suited hand but how nice opposite what could be a very weak dummy? Playing Teams, it is often correct to just take the plus no matter how small it is while in Pairs, +300 would not be a great score if 5
was making.
Yet, is it? It will sometimes but with a likely loser in each minor, the chances of 11 tricks in spades are not great…unless West is stronger. That then brings us to another saying: “the player in your partnership who bids to game should be the one making the final decision unless their partner has anything special about their hand”. 5-5 in the majors is good but not great. West will need aces to make 5 and with one or two will double 5
.
So, leave the decision to partner..and this time partner will pass. +50 will not be a great score as inevitably in the field, some will play 4 which is unbeatable. With those heart honours, East might double increasing the penalty to 100 though on some days, that will convert -400 to -550!
Such decisions are not easy and freak hands test our belief in these guidelines. Here, the saying about “the 5 level belonging to the opposition” is certainly true.
