According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Bridge is the English pronunciation of a game called 'Biritch', which was also known as Russian Whist. Forms of Bridge in many variants have been played for centuries.The modern game largely emerged following rule changes proposed by Harold Vanderbilt in 1925, which were designed to make the game more challenging, interesting and balanced. The New Zealand Bridge Association governs the game in New Zealand as a member of the World Bridge Foundation (WBF).
The New Zealand Contract Bridge Association was formed in 1936 and is the official body for contract bridge in New Zealand. It is a member of the South Pacific Zone of the World Bridge Federation.
