Butler is the scoring system used in most Swiss Pairs events

For each baord the average score is calculated (usually with the extreme ones at each end discarded)

One's own score is compared with that and converted to IMPs as if your team-mates got that score in a teams event

If you look at the results on any board in a Swiss Pairs event you should be able to work out what is going on

What does in mean in a Team event Nick? I always look and compare with our team-mates but I'm not sure if it works like that.

    Its just like playing teams

But instead of having real team-mates you have imaginary ones

And the score they get is the average of the room
    And its called the datum

So if, for example, your score is 100 points better than the datum you gain 3 IMPs
