How to find this Slam

West holds:

S: -

H: JT987

D: Q64

C: K9643

and in first seat opens 2H, specifically promising 5 hearts and 5 of a minor with 5-9 HCPs.

East holds:

S: KQ86543

H: AKQ62

D: T

C
: -

What action should East take and what should follow please? (No bidding from NS) I held the East hand and bid 2NT (positive asking for 2nd suit and point count), feeling quite sure there was going to be 6H available but we got only to 4 as I was struggling to think of a way I could, with certainty, establish we had only 1 diamond or spade loser. Should we even get to 6?

I would appreciate any thoughtful, helpful answers to improve my game!

Cheers

Ed

If you ask with 2NT it is a good idea to play simple GF relay over the repsonse with the lower the non-suits as the asking bid (GF at that stage).  Playing it as 5/5s makes that an easy and efficitent method - not so easy for the 5/4+ people but still doable.

Take here, if that is a minimum, the bidding might go (just making this up but google might find you a consisdered set of relays):

    2H...

    2NT (ask, invite+)

    3C (min, H+C)

    3D (ask, GF)

    3D (high shortage) (other steps being: even (1516, 1615), 2515, 3505, 2506)  I'd leave out the 6/6s).

    3H (ask, GF)

    3S (0535 shape)

It would then take a bit of denial cues to find out about the JH (without it slam looks a very poor contract).

In any event, it is not that great a slam to be worried about missing.  If they lead a heart you only have 9 tricks.  You'll probably have to bring in the spade suit as winners and they requires a suitable lay of the cards for you.

Sorry, the final shape showing bid would be 3NT, not 3S (the steps being 1525, 0535).

You can play a similar scheme over your MCBs.  When I was taught it many moons ago the person who taught it to me called it a "Residual Shape Ask", so maybe search for that.

We play 2!H as 9-12 with 5+ Hearts so it important to have good methods over that as slam is not uncommon.

2NT is a game try or better normally with Heart support but can be big and balanced.

3C is a transfer to Diamonds with game forcing values (opener accecpts with 3+ diamonds)

3D is either a mixed/weak raise to 3H or a slam try in hearts with a shortage.

3H is game forcing with 5+ spades (opener accecpts with 3 card support)

3S is gameforcing with 5+ clubs (opener generally bids 3NT unless they really like C)

    so our sequence:

    2H - 3D

    3H - 4C

    4H - ?

partners hand really did not get better on hearing about our Club shortage and so expresses this by refusing to cue. Responder may now try again by bidding their Spade suit but opener will remain unimpoessed and bid 5H. Partner should cue a minor after 4S as they are forced to at least 5H but they will not cue the useless K of clubs since it looks like we have a club singleton.

So after trying twice responder will probably sign off in 5H expecting 1S and 1D loser.
